About Me

My name is Debbie Grifka and I love to design and make quilts! Bold, graphic quilts are my favorites.

I have been sewing since I was young and made lots of my own clothes through high school, work and pregnancies. Somehow, I didn’t find much time to sew after my daughters were born! When I did manage a little time to sew I made dresses for the girls, Halloween costumes and home dec projects.

I had been interested in quilting for years, but had never committed myself to what seemed like an overwhelming and large project. Even so, I bought several books and some tools. One day in 2002, I began to work on a wall hanging. I’m not really sure what combination of factors lead me to start that day, but I have been obsessed ever since. I love designing and making quilts!

It has been such an interesting journey to discover what kinds of quilt are my style. I like so many different “styles” of quilts that it took some time for me to figure it out. For me, it is all about the graphic impact of the quilt, including the colors. I like to make modern quilts with traditional materials. I love what you can do with fabric, a needle and some thread (a sewing machine helps too!).

I don’t have any education in art or design. In fact, for most of my life I didn’t even consider myself to be very creative. My jobs have been primarily in the accounting/administrative/secretarial areas.

In the rest of my life, I have a terrific and supportive husband and my two daughters are now amazing teenagers young women (yikes, my older daughter is now 20!)  Home is Ann Arbor, MI.
