SMS Giveaway Week!

It's a very lucky thing for me that Sew, Mama, Sew decided to expand their Giveaway Day to a Week.  I have been dealing with the worst cold I've had in years and that put me way behind on finishing up my giveaway quilt.

Welcome to those of you who are new here!  My name is Debbie and this is where I share my sewing adventures and a little of the rest of my life too.

Some of my regular readers may recognize the pattern I used to make this quilt.  It is my Triangle Maze pattern, which was originally a free pattern here on the blog.  I have updated the pattern and added five more sizes - yes five!  The free pattern was for a crib sized quilt and now I have added the baby size (shown) and throw, twin, full, and queen/king sizes.  You can find the pattern in my Etsy shop or at PatternSpot.

This is the fourth or fifth quilt I've made from this pattern and every time I get more ideas for color combinations to try.  Right now, I'd love to make this baby quilt again with lots of pretty pink prints.  I'm not sure if I'd use only pink or whether I might add in a little grey too.

Anyway, giveaway details:
I'm giving away this baby quilt which measures approximately 36" x 45".  I used Kona Ash, Bright Peri and Bahama Blue and an orange solid from my stash that is similar to Kona School Bus or Orange.  It has been washed and is full of crinkly goodness.  The vertical quilting lines are quilted with grey thread and the horizontal quilting lines are in aqua thread. The back is the same orange used on the front.

To enter, leave me a comment telling me what color thread you like to use for quilting.  Do you always use white, another color, variegated thread, matching or contrasting?  If you are a follower or become one, leave me a second comment letting me know and you'll be entered a second time.   (You can follow me on FaceBook too - button in left column)  I am happy to ship internationally.  The giveaway will close at the end of the day on December 16 US EST.  Please be sure to leave me a way to contact you if you are a "no-reply blogger".

Don't forget to check out all six categories of giveaways back at Sew, Mama, Sew!

  1. Great looking quilt, I would love to win it :) I have only ever done quilting once on a pillow, I haven't sewn in quite some time but if I ever get to it again, I would love to do some handstitch quilting in a contrasting color!

  2. I love white, but would really like to try variegated :)

  3. Holy wow - what a gorgeously modern quilt! Love that pattern.
I'm a fan of matching my thread to my sashing, in general. I tend to use a lot of white - I just like how bright and crisp it is. But I did try a zebra variegated from Aurifil on a halloween quilt and it was pretty darn rad, so I'm starting to veer towards variegateds!

  4. What a pretty quilt! I have only done tiny quilting projects. Recently I made a quilted pencil case and used a rainbow of different colors of threads to liven up the fabric:).

  5. I use a lot of varigated threads, both shiny and flat cottons. Depending on what the quilt calls for I may go contrasting or something that melts in. The baby quilt is adorable.. perfect for my friend's new baby boy!

  6. I like to match my thread. I love the look of contrasting but I feel like I am not that neat yet at my sewing to do contrasting. Great quilt!

  7. Hi, This is really a lovely giveaway! Thanks for the chance to win it.
I don't sew, but I love to crochet and knit and the color I use most is green!

  8. What a beautiful quilt! I adore variegated thread, but only use it when I'm quilting a design I know. If I'm trying something new, then I stick to cream or natural.

  9. I love this so lively a quilt!!
I have a colorful quilt that has
wedding rings on the front... but when
you turn it over it is white with
a tree of life quilted into it with
green leaves and a brown trunk, it
sounds wild but it is lovely.
I have been stitching the family names
    into it.

  10. What a fun quilt! I use variegated thread for everything that will show.

  13. I am a relatively new quilter so I'm curiously reading the comments about thread. And what a beautiful quilt. I will be a new follower for sure. I tend to stick with white thread or a pale color, but am interested in learning more about how to use thread as a contrast. Thank you.

  14. Such a great quilt. I use alot of white and I've been meaning to try grey.

  16. Oh my goodness! A chance to win one of Debbie's quilts. How awesome is that?!

I quilt each piece differently. Sometimes the design calls for something that blends in, highlighting what you want to show off. Other times, I want the quilting to stand out, so I will contrast. Sorry, I don't have a single approach for all my pieces, so I can't give you a straight answer.

  17. I love all your quilts. That one is wonderful as well.

  18. Beautiful quilt!!

I like to use multiple colors but I always match the bobbin to the back color and then I pull a nice bright color off the front for the top thread. I love threads!!

  40. You're giving away...a quilt...wow, what a generous soul you are! So much work! As for thread, I usually try to match one of the main colors in the quilt, if possible. If it's mult-colored, then I go for a neutral taupe or beige tone.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love the quilt, orange is a favorite of mine, and I do like modern quilts.

I have quilted with both neutral and contrasting threads, but have little experience to decide which is best for me yet. I do like the look of the variegated thread I have seen used in some quilts. I would like to try using it.

  68. I used to always get worked up about what color to use for quilting... what if the color looks good on the front, but not the back? Then finally this weekend I had an epiphany; why not use a different color for the bobbin? Haha, I know it's nothing original, but I was glad to have thought of it!

  80. That quilt is lovely. My teacher (I'm a newbie) tells me to use a matching thread so the quilting can't be seen until I've had enough experience. But what do I do when the quilt is made of many disparate fabrics?

  86. Thanks for the fabulous giveaway opportunity!

I usually try to do something contrasting, but matching — if that makes sense. I used a fuchsia thread on my last quilt, which was a coin stack quilt. The bulk of the quilt was white but the coins were various colors: Pinks, greens, yellows and oranges. The fuchsia matched the coins but was a nice contrast against the white.

  122. Ooooh, LOVE that quilt! My 6-month old son will love doing his power tummy time workouts on it! :D I'm a contrasting color kinda gal when it comes to thread. It sometimes comes out of not having the matching color I'd prefer and other times I just like the extra zing a yellow thread gives to orange fabric or a red thread on pink or turquoise on cobalt...
Love your giveaway; don't love a bad cold...feel better soon! :D

I think I've done a little of everything when it comes to quilting - matching thread (either to the front or the back), contrasting thread, variegated. I think I usually aim for the quilting to blend in, though.

  149. On craft projects, I tend to use contrasting thread :)

  150. I like to contrast the quilting thread. I'm a big fan of red thread. Your quilt is beautiful.

  151. Wow! What a generous giveaway!

I prefer to use matching thread since my mistakes don't show as easily.

  152. on most fabrics i use an off white/natural coloured thread, but for darker fabrics i use a light grey. on the quilting i usually tend to go for variegated threads because i think it gives a bolder look.
thanks for the generous giveaway. i have a good home ready and waiting to accept this win :)

  153. I usually use white or a natural color, but I'd love to try variegated. Thanks for this great giveaway! oakdryad5 (at) yahoo (dot) com

  154. What a generous giveaway. Thanks for participating. I have used neutral colored thread, and colored. It really depends on whether I want it to blend in or stand out.

  155. What a beautiful quilt, who ever receives it will have a family heirloom!
My fav colour for quilting is grey and I like to baste with brown.

  156. I've normally used white thread because I normally use Kona white but have used green once. Bought a few variegated threads but have not used it yet.

  157. I have not quilted in years and all the beautiful threads now available were not back then. I would use variegated to make a quilt now- I have been dreaming of making a landscape quilt.

  158. Its beautiful! I don't actually quilt though I hope to pick it up soon. I think I'll definitely mix it up when it comes to thread color though!

  159. I was thinking about it, and I decided that it depended on how badly I wanted to hide my mistakes and how intricate the quilting was ! My last two have had a emerald green thread and white.

  160. i always tend to match my thread and fabric. Lovely quilt!

  161. I haven't made many quilts. For the few I've made, I match the thread to the main color. I never thought about doing a different color, but since I quilt them on my home machine with straight (sort of) lines, I probably don't want to highlight the thread. I'm intrigued now though. What about a mostly solid with a wildly different thread?

  162. I am new to quilting. The woman that trained me says grey is the way to go, always. I like when the thread contrasts.

  163. I just read quilting blogs, I haven't actually quilted yet! I'm usually a fan of quilting the blends in more than stands out, I like the fabric to be the focus. :) (I've also never owned a handmade quilt so am excited at the chance to win one!)

  166. Looking to try quilting for the first time soon so I guess i can't really answer that question until then. Perhaps different projects require different threads

  168. I like to use a light grey that seems to work with almost everything. It's like magic. Seriously, you're giving away a whole quilt? That is amazing and it's beautiful. Perfect for a baby boy.

  169. I did also become a new follower. Your etsy goods are great. The last project I did was a halloween potholder that was quilted with this orange/yellow vintage thread that was my grandmothers.

  170. I'm not the most confident quilter around and that might be the reason for me often going for variegated thread. I imagine that wonkiness is less visible if the thread and fabric goes in and out of matching. If you know what i mean. :)

Thanks for hosting such a generous give away! The quilt is absolutely adorable and I'm glad you're willing to part with it so one of us can enjoy it instead. :) Thank you!

  171. What a beautiful quilt! I usually use grey also, or off white. I used variegated once but I'm not confident enough of my quilting to be very bold,

  172. What a great quilt! The colors and simplicity are wonderful! I like to use variegated when I can. But mostly a natural color or white.
    Thanks for the chance...

  173. What a lovely quilt!

I usually try to blend/match and sometimes I will use a matching on top and a bobbin to match the back ... doesn't always go so well tho haha. I need to learn to be more bold!

  174. I tend to quilt with a white or cream and then match the thread for the rest of the quilt.

Thanks for a chance to win.
